This publication discusses the history of the most important portrait in the Wilanów collection. The circumstances of painting and purchase of this work are not yet fully clarified. The course of cooperation between Potocki and David is still intriguing, as well as the phenomenon of the creation of a peculiar legend of the work, which intertwined artistic threads with a story about a moment of equestrian triumph over the previously untamed stallion from the stable of the king of Naples. The painting was created in the years 1780-1781 and is one of the most excellent images of Poles. It is also considered as one of the most valued works of Jacques Louis David (1748-1825).
