Author: Agnieszka Laudy
Historical silk textiles, which are the subject of research presented in this book, are of special interest as objects of unique historical and cultural value, characterized by the fineness, colors and texture of the material of which they were made. Laboratory examination of the historic silk textiles focused on identifying the environmental factors affecting the preservation of these objects, such as temperature and intensity of light radiation and presence of biotitic factors. The combination of processes taking place in the objects with the passing of time leads to their aging and the oxidation or reduction of chemical components, that is, they open up the historic textile, as a source of carbon and nitrogen, as well as other nutritious for microorganisms present in a museum environment. This discusses the history of this research as well as potential threats for the delicate silk velour, which decorates the walls of the Royal Apartments. It shows how the state of the surroundings of a historical object can become a threat to these objects and how to prevent such threats.
